Centerboard Yacht Club

South Portland, Maine

I am always interested in hearing about new places to visit - we tend to favor out of the way and deserted places, but had an interesting experience during the horrible weather last week - we were out near Boothbay and had been headed for Love Cove when on a whim we decided to call Newagen Seaside Inn to enquire about their rental moorings - they have two which rent for $50 per night - the cost seemed steep to us, but then we heard that this includes use of the inn's facilities (though no showers) and a free breakfast buffet for the crew. We were glad to have access to the inn and its fireplace (you remember the weather was rain fog and in the 50's!) and the buffet was probably worth close to $50 itself. Our son Will loved the game room which had pool, ping pong and, best of all, two old-fashioned set-up-the-pins-yourself bowling alleys. There was also a pool and tennis and a great resataurant. A wonderful spot on a lousy day. It was a little rolly at high tide, but bearable. And the Hotel people could not have been nicer. We'll be back - we'll also be recommending the place to our land-based travelers who are looking for a place to stay. A classic Maine summer hotel.

I wouldn’t have thought of Newagen, but I will now!

I had some good advice on the club cruise from my new cruising buddies: If you are in Buck’s Harbor, go to the Bucks Harbor Market around 9:30AM to get freshly baked bread! There were several different choices and it was still warm from the oven! …and in the cooler were containers of homemade dishes like fish chowder, tortellini, and other ready-to-eats. I picked up some local crabmeat to combine with the fresh bread for an amazing lunch.
